In Traditional Chinese Medicine is it thought that nausea and vomiting during pregnancy is caused by the Qi (energy) flowing the wrong way. This is known as 'rebellious Stomach Qi'; normally the Stomach Qi descends, but due to the changes that occur during pregnancy, this Qi rebels and heads upwards, causing the unsavoury nausea. Specially selected acupuncture points encourage the rebellious Qi to descend, diminishing the unpleasant feelings of nausea, retching and vomiting. Studies show Acupuncture is an effective treatment for women who experience nausea and dry retching in early pregnancy (Smith, C, 2002).
