Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice that involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate nerve-rich areas and influence various physiological functions.
Traditional Chinese Medicine Perspective
According to TCM principles, acupuncture helps balance the flow of vital energy, known as "Qi" (pronounced "chee"), along pathways called meridians. It is believed that disruptions or imbalances in the flow of Qi can lead to illness or discomfort. Acupuncture aims to restore the smooth flow of Qi and promote overall health.
Western Medicine Perspective
From a Western perspective, acupuncture is thought to stimulate the nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord. The insertion of acupuncture needles at specific points triggers the release of various biochemical substances, such as endorphins (natural painkillers), neurotransmitters, and hormones. These biochemical changes can modulate pain perception, reduce inflammation, and promote physiological balance.
Summary of How Acupuncture is Believed to Work
Gate Control Theory
One theory proposed to explain the mechanism of acupuncture is the gate control theory of pain. According to this theory, the stimulation of acupuncture points sends signals along nerve fibres that compete with pain signals travelling along the same pathways. This can effectively "close the gate" to pain signals, reducing the perception of pain.
Neurotransmitter Release
Acupuncture has been shown to stimulate the release of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, which plays a role in mood regulation, and noradrenaline, which is involved in stress response and pain modulation. These neurotransmitters can influence various physiological processes, including pain perception and emotional well-being.
Blood Flow Regulation
Acupuncture may also affect blood flow and circulation. Studies have shown that acupuncture can dilate blood vessels and increase blood flow to specific areas of the body. Improved blood circulation can promote healing, reduce inflammation, and facilitate the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to tissues.
Modulation of Neural Activity
Acupuncture has been found to influence the activity of various neural structures in the brain, including the hypothalamus, pituitary gland, and amygdala. These brain regions are involved in regulating hormonal balance, stress response, and emotional processing, suggesting that acupuncture may have effects beyond pain relief.

Chinese Herbal Medicine
Chinese Herbal Medicine is a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and has been practiced for thousands of years as a system of healthcare in China and other parts of East Asia.
Moxibustion (Moxa)
Moxibustion is a traditional Chinese medicine technique that involves burning the herb mugwort (Artemisia vulgaris) to stimulate specific acupuncture points on the body.
Cupping
Cupping is a traditional therapy that involves placing cups on the skin to create suction. The cups can be made of various materials, including glass, silicone, or bamboo, and they come in different sizes.
Auricular (Ear) Acupuncture
Auricular acupuncture, also known as ear acupuncture or auriculotherapy, is a form of acupuncture that involves stimulating specific points on the external ear to address various health conditions.
Gua Sha
Gua Sha is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapy that involves scraping the skin with a smooth-edged tool to promote blood circulation and stimulate the body's natural healing response.
